Car accidents involving motorcycles often end with fatality

California residents who carry a driver's license know that with this privilege comes a great responsibility to obey traffic laws, avoid alcohol and drugs before driving and minimize distractions in the vehicle. One could add to this list the expectation that anyone involved in a collision will remain at the scene and be accountable for any part they have played in the incident. Most people probably have difficulty understanding car accidents in which the driver who is likely responsible flees from the scene, but unfortunately, this type of situation does occur.

In a recent example, a 48-year-old woman was killed while driving her motorcycle west on a Corona roadway on a Wednesday evening. According to police, an eastbound vehicle collided with her motorcycle when it made a left turn in front of her. The motorcyclist was injured after the crash threw her off her vehicle. Although she was transported to a hospital, sadly, she succumbed to her injuries the next day. The other driver fled the crash scene in his vehicle.

Two days after the incident, police examined a vehicle found not far from the crash site with damage consistent with the collision. They arrested the car's 85-year-old owner on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. Reportedly, the victim's husband had located the suspect's vehicle on his own and subsequently called the authorities.

Drivers who cause car accidents like this one understandably feel a great deal of fear and anxiety in the aftermath. These feelings sometimes lead to unexpected behavior, such as the person responsible prematurely leaving the scene. However, this type of response typically results in an even worse situation. Separate from any criminal charges this driver now faces, the victim's husband has the right to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit through the California civil justice system. An attorney experienced in personal injury law can be a valuable resource in such cases.
